Description:

ANSYS Fluent software contains the broad physical modeling capabilities needed to model flow, turbulence, heat transfer, and reactions for industrial applications ranging from air flow over an aircraft wing to combustion in a furnace, from bubble columns to oil platforms, from blood flow to semiconductor manufacturing, and from clean room design to wastewater treatment plants. Special models that give the software the ability to model in-cylinder combustion, aeroacoustics, turbomachinery, and multiphase systems have served to broaden its reach.

Requirement

Step 1: Please register to UTM HPC Account
Step 2: HPC admin (hpc@utm.my) will sent HPC account and ANSYS Software Installation Manual to your email.
Step 3: Please print screen your personal computer HOSTNAME and email to hpc@utm.my. Requirement of this HOSTNAME is for allows user to use ANSYS software on a personal computer. How to get HOSTNAME as follows

1. Run Command Prompt
2. Type hostname and Enter

Software Download

You can download ANSYS software to be installed on a personal computer as link below:
ANSYS 14.0: Win32BIT Win64BIT Linux
ANSYS 15.0: Windows Linux
ANSYS 16.0: Windows Linux
ANSYS 17.0: Windows
ANSYS 18.0: Windows

The installer is around 2GB to 5GB. The installer has been slice into several parts for ease of download.
Please download 7-Zip to extract the content by right-clicking ANSYS-win32.zip.001,etc and choose 7-Zip>Extract Files
 

How To Run Job ANSYS Using HPC

To get input file (.cas) from ANSYS Software: Download
To view result/output file (.dat): Download

CASE 1: Submit A Fluent Job

In the example below the case and data files model.cas and model.dat will be processed over 400 by Fluent by reading instructions from the model_journal file. Please make sure that model journal read to your case file. For example, rename to your case file name in the model journal.

Example model journal file as below. Save model journal file as model_journal name using your text pad.

solve/iterate 400
file/binary-files n
file/confirm-overwrite n
file/write-data model.dat

Example submission script as below. For example, create a submission script file called pbs-script that contains the lines below. This example script requests one node and eight processor cores.

#PBS -l nodes=1:ppn=8

module load fluent/18.0

nCPU=8

journal=model_journal

CASE 2: Submit A CFX Job

For CFX job not require a model journal file. Rename INP_FILE to your input file name. For example, create a submission script file called pbs-script that contains the lines below. This example script requests one node and eight processor cores.

#PBS -N job.cfx
#PBS -l nodes=1:ppn=8
#PBS -m abe

INP_FILE=cfx_inp_file.def

module load cfx/18.0

# don't edit anything below
cd ${PBS_O_WORKDIR}

Transfering Files & Submitting Job

Then, upload the submission script above and your input file to the HPC using WinSCP tool. To submit a job, please using a Putty tool and run the command below. How to access the HPC server, please go to our New User Guide page.
 
Submit the Fluent/CFX submission job to the queue:

Users can submit the job using two options as below. The pbs-script name below is the name of your submission script.

qsub -q bigmem pbs-script
OR
qsub -q hpc pbs-script
Please note that queue for hpc above have 8 core’s for each cluster/node so if you are using this cluster please make sure in the script, you state “ppn=8″ to make sure your job can run.

The figure shows that the performance use of UTM HPC more efficient than using a Personal Computer (PC).
